The Game Awards Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 1, 2026
Ola Balola LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates https://www.thegameawards.com and its associated voting features (the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and disclose it, how long we retain it, and the choices and rights available to you, including how to request deletion of your voting account and personal information.
Definitions
Personal information means information that identifies, relates to, or can reasonably be linked to an individual. Usage information means information collected automatically about how you access and use the Service. Cookies are small files stored on your computer or mobile device.
Ola Balola LLC is the controller of the personal information described in this policy. Service providers are companies or individuals that process personal information on our behalf to help us operate the Service.
Information We Collect
Information you provide
We collect information you provide when you contact us, request support, or choose to subscribe to updates, such as your name, email address, and the contents of your communications. Please do not send passwords or unnecessary sensitive information in support or privacy requests.
Google sign in and voting accounts
When you choose to sign in with Google to participate in voting, we collect your name, email address, and profile photo, if available, from your Google account. We use this information to create and authenticate your voting account and administer your participation.
We also collect information about your voting activity, including your selections and the categories or rounds in which you participate.
Usage information
We may collect your IP address, browser type and version, device identifiers, pages visited, the date and time of your visit, time spent on pages, and other diagnostic information. We use this information to operate, secure, understand, and improve the Service, subject to the restrictions on voting information described below.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies, including tags, scripts, and beacons, to operate the Service, remember preferences, support security, and understand website activity. These may include session cookies, preference cookies, and security cookies. Analytics and advertising technologies are described later in this policy.
You can manage cookies through your browser settings and any privacy controls offered on the Service. Blocking certain cookies may prevent sign-in, voting, or other features from working. Where applicable law requires consent for nonessential cookies or similar technologies, we obtain that consent before using them. Further information is available in our Cookies Policy at https://thegameawards.com/cookies-policy.
How We Use Information
We use personal information to provide and maintain the Service; create, authenticate, and manage accounts; record and administer votes; provide support; communicate important service changes; analyze performance; and detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, and misuse.
For voting, we use account and participation information to help prevent duplicate accounts and fraudulent voting and to enforce the limits applicable to each category, round, or voting period under our published voting rules. These measures support fair participation and help prevent an individual from exceeding the permitted number of votes. Google sign-in alone does not establish that each account belongs to a different person.
We also use information as necessary to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
Marketing communications
You may choose to receive news, announcements, offers, and information about The Game Awards and related events. You can unsubscribe using the instructions in those messages or by contacting [email protected]. Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent necessary account, security, or privacy communications.
We do not use information obtained through Google sign-in or your individual voting selections for targeted advertising. We do not share that information with sponsors or advertisers for their own marketing purposes. These restrictions apply even where website analytics or advertising technologies are used elsewhere on the Service.
Legal Bases for Processing
Where the GDPR or similar law applies, our legal basis depends on the information and the purpose of processing. We process information where necessary to provide the Service under our agreement with you; where you have given consent; where necessary for our legitimate interests, such as securing the Service, preventing fraud, and improving its operation, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights; or where necessary to comply with law.
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before you withdrew consent.
How We Disclose Information
Voting account information
We do not sell your voting account information or individual voting records. We do not disclose information obtained through Google sign-in or individual voting selections to sponsors, advertisers, or other third parties for their own marketing purposes.
Limited disclosures to service providers and for legal or security purposes are described below. We may publish aggregate voting results that do not identify individual voters.
Service providers
We may use service providers to host and maintain the Service, authenticate users, operate and secure voting, provide support, and perform other services on our behalf. These providers may access personal information only as necessary to perform their tasks and are subject to appropriate restrictions on its use and disclosure. They may not use voting account information or individual voting records for their own purposes.
Third-party analytics and advertising activities involving general website usage information are described separately below and remain subject to the restrictions on Google sign-in information and individual voting selections.
Legal and security disclosures
We may disclose personal information where required by law, a court order, or a valid request from a public authority. We may also disclose information where legally permitted and reasonably necessary to investigate fraud or wrongdoing, protect the security of the Service, protect the rights or property of Ola Balola LLC, protect users or the public, or establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
Website Analytics and Advertising
Google Analytics
We may use Google Analytics to understand visits and activity on the Service. Information collected through this service is processed by Google according to the enabled settings and Google’s policies. Depending on those settings, information may be used with other Google services, including for advertising. This does not authorize use of Google sign-in information or individual voting selections for targeted advertising.
You can learn about Google’s practices at https://policies.google.com/privacy and its Analytics browser opt-out tool at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Browser tools may not address all collection or all devices; use the privacy controls available to you as applicable.
Advertising and remarketing
We may use website cookies and similar technologies with advertising providers, including X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, to show ads about The Game Awards on other services based on previous visits to our website. These providers may receive browser, device, and website activity information. Their own processing is governed by their privacy policies and your settings, subject to applicable law.
You can review their practices and privacy choices at https://x.com/en/privacy and https://www.facebook.com/privacy/policy/. You can also manage available advertising preferences through those services, your browser or device, and any privacy controls offered on our Service. Opting out of personalized advertising does not necessarily stop all advertising.
Browser privacy signals
Our Service does not currently respond to the browser’s legacy Do Not Track setting. This is separate from legally recognized opt-out preference signals, such as Global Privacy Control, which we honor where applicable law requires.
How Long We Retain Information
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including operating your account, administering and verifying voting, providing support, protecting the Service, resolving disputes, and meeting legal obligations.
Retention depends on the information involved, the purpose of its use, whether you maintain an account, and applicable legal requirements. Usage information is retained as necessary for analysis, security, and functionality. When personal information is no longer needed, we delete it or render it no longer identifiable.
Account and Data Deletion
You may request deletion of your voting account and associated personal information at any time by emailing [email protected] with the subject line “Voting Account and Data Deletion.”
Include the email address associated with your voting account. Do not include your password. We may ask for additional information reasonably necessary to verify that you own the account before acting on the request.
Once verified, we will delete your voting account and associated personal information and instruct relevant service providers processing that information on our behalf to do the same, subject to applicable legal exceptions. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
If an exception requires or permits us to retain certain information, we will explain the applicable reason and limit retention and use to what is necessary. Aggregate or de-identified results that can no longer be linked to you may be retained. Deleting your voting account does not delete your Google account.
Your Privacy Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live and applicable law, you may have rights to access or obtain a copy of your personal information; correct inaccurate or incomplete information; request deletion; restrict or object to processing; obtain information in a portable format; withdraw consent; and opt out of certain advertising-related processing, sales, or sharing where applicable.
To exercise a right, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity and, where applicable, the authority of a person acting on your behalf. We will respond as required by applicable law and explain any applicable limitation or exception. You will not be discriminated against for exercising rights protected by law.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you may complain to your local data protection authority about our processing of your information. You may also contact us first so that we can address your concern.
International Transfers
We operate in the United States, and your information may be processed there and in other jurisdictions where our service providers operate. Data protection laws may differ from those in your home jurisdiction.
Where applicable law requires safeguards for an international transfer, we use the required safeguards or another lawful transfer mechanism. You may contact [email protected] for information about the safeguards applicable to your information. Use of the Service alone does not replace any consent or other legal requirement applicable to a transfer.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal information. No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Links to Other Sites
The Service may link to websites or services operated by others. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies. We encourage you to review those policies before providing information to them.
Children and Voting Eligibility
Voting accounts are available only to individuals aged 18 or older who meet the eligibility requirements in our Terms of Use and voting rules. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below that age through voting accounts. Where applicable law requires parental consent for processing a child’s information, we obtain it before that processing.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided information contrary to these requirements, contact [email protected]. If we learn that information has been collected improperly, we will take appropriate steps to delete it and address the account.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy here and update its effective date. We will provide notice by email and/or a prominent notice on the Service before changes take effect, and obtain consent where required by law. Changes take effect on the stated effective date.
